Love comes and goes, but a handmade silver ring is forever…There’s no better illustration of this simple “rule” than a rundown of the diamond, gold and silver rings given as a token of love and engagement to celebrities in recent years. While some of the love stories immortalized by these fabulous gold and silver rings endure, others have long since fizzled, leaving behind nothing but a gem-studded confection to be worn despite all, auctioned, or stored in a safe-deposit box. As celebrity history shows, being given a flashy and expensive gold, platinum or silver ring is no guarantee of everlasting love.

Actress Elizabeth Taylor is well-known for having been given a 30-carat emerald-cut diamond by Michael Todd, her third – and some say her most beloved – husband. But Todd was killed in a plane crash, and Taylor moved on to a stormy, infamous on-again, off-again relationship with Richard Burton. Not to be outdone by his predecessor, Burton gave Taylor a 39-carat, pear-shaped Krupp diamond ring… no simple silver ring for this sparkling starlet!

Somewhat smaller rings were received by Priscilla Presley (a 3.5 carat diamond engagement ring, bestowed by the King himself) and Sharon Stone (also a 3.5 carat ring, with the dazzle distributed over three emerald-cut diamonds). Though neither the marriage to Elvis nor that to Phil Bronstein, respectively, amounted to much, both women walked away with far more than a humble if lovely handmade silver ring. Also amongst the divas with a ring for the “out” box is famous pop star Madonna,  who received an exquisite, three-stone antique Edwardian diamond ring with a decorative platinum band from her now-ex-husband Guy Ritchie. Silver rings look sort-of like platinum, no?

Two young women who are mostly famous for being famous (or infamous) also share the distinction of having each received two engagement rings from the same suitor. Paris Hilton, an heiress with more than enough money to buy us each a nice handmade silver ring, was engaged to billionaire Paris Latsis with two famous engagement rings: a canary diamond ring of 24 carats worth $5 million, and an emerald-cut, 15-carat diamond ring worth $2.1 million. Nothing succeeds like excess…Britney Spears also had two engagement rings: a 4-carat diamond ring worth $40,000, which she chose and paid for herself before the wedding, and a second engagement ring given to her by now-ex-husband Kevin Federline nine months after the wedding.

Last but not least, American sweetheart Jennifer Lopez received a radiant pink 6-carat diamond ring from Ben Affleck, which quickly drew public attention. Complete with three white baguette diamonds and a platinum band, this frothy engagement bauble cost a mere $1.2 million – not quite enough to keep the marriage from being called off only hours before it was supposed to begin… Ultimately, Lopez married singer Marc Anthony instead… who gave her -? The tabloids were mum about the wedding, which the pair kept private… but we hope he gave her a simple, everlasting, handmade silver ring.
