Love silver jewellery? So do we… But even silver jewellery can only look as good as we make it look. That’s right – choosing your silver jewellery is only half the battle. You must also wear it well. Here are some basic “dos” and “don’ts” for making your silver jewellery look its best, and looking your best in silver jewellery.
Do choose silver jewellery that complements the shape of your face and neck (earrings, necklaces), the length and width of your fingers (rings), and the length of your hair (earrings).
Don’t choose silver jewellery that makes your face look rounder or longer than it is, your neck look thicker than it is, or your fingers look stubbier than they are.
Do choose silver jewllery with gemstones that complement the colour of your eyes (earrings) and the tone of your skin (bracelets, necklaces, rings).
Don’t choose silver jewellery with gemstones that make you look sallow, greenish, or like you’ve ingested too much beta carotene.
Do wear silver jewellery that’s appropriate for your profession and place of work: short or choker necklaces, small rings, demure gemstones such as pearls, zircons and peridots.
Don’t wear silver jewellery that’s going to interfere with your work: a nurse or teacher would do best not to wear a long silver necklace with a large pendant, for instance, that could bash a patient or student in the head.
Do wear silver jewellery that suits you and your life-style. If you fancy being out and about, then indulge your love for trendy bangles, silver link necklaces, and large, colourful gemstones.
Don’t wear silver jewellery that will interfere with who you are or what you’re doing. Anklets should probably not be worn on a hike (although we have seen someone’s anklet survive the birth of her daughter, intact); a bunch of bangle bracelets is not a good idea if you talk with your hands.
Do wear silver jewellery that’s season-appropriate: rings and anklets in summer, necklaces galore in winter.
Don’t wear silver jewellery that will get caught on your clothing or be hidden from view: no sense wearing a silver and gemstone anklet under your boots, lovely zircon and silver stud earrings under your hat, silver rings under your gloves, or that cool silver geometric bracelet that keeps pulling out strands of your sweater.
Sounds obvious, perhaps, but we’ve all been known to make a gaffe or two now and then. So keep these simple “do’s” and “don’ts” in mind, and both you and your silver jewellery will look forever fab!
